Comparison of Sintered Tabular Corundum and Fused Corundum

Jan 26, 2021
Fused corundum is generally used in refractory materials of white corundum, sub-white corundum and brown corundum. It is mainly based on molten alumina or bauxite as raw materials. Let the editor of Qianjiaxin Refractories give you a detailed introduction to the difference between sintered tabular corundum and fused corundum!

The main differences between sintered corundum and fused corundum are:
The impurity content of the sintered corundum is low and uniform, and the impurity content of the molten corundum is high and uneven. Sintered corundum is made of high-purity industrial alumina as the raw material, and no additives are added during the production process. Other impurities such as iron, silicon and sodium are trace amounts, except for a small amount of mechanical iron which is crushed (iron can be removed by a magnetic separator).

In the production process of fused corundum, iron and carbon should be added as additives, and impurities such as iron, carbon, silicon, and sodium should be added, which is much higher than that of sintered corundum. At the same time, due to the different cooling rates of different parts during the cooling process of corundum melt, the impurity content of different parts is also different. Therefore, molten corundum emphasizes strict selection, while sintered corundum does not need to be picked up.

Sintered corundum is superior to molten corundum in thermal shock resistance and peeling resistance. Sintered corundum corundum has good thermal shock resistance and peeling resistance, and has a certain number of closed cells. The spherical closed cells effectively resist thermal shock and prevent cracks from spreading. The molten corundum has more open cells and fewer closed cells, and forms larger single crystals during a slower cooling process. These single crystals generate microcracks during the crushing process, thereby reducing thermal shock resistance and peeling resistance.

The production process of sintered corundum is more energy-saving and environmentally friendly than molten corundum. The production of fused corundum is a high energy consumption industry. Each ton of fused corundum consumes 2300-3300 kWh of electricity, while the comprehensive energy consumption of sintered corundum is only one-seventh to one-tenth of that of fused corundum. In the production process of molten corundum, a large amount of exhaust gas and slag are emitted. In the production of sintered corundum, natural gas is used as the heat source. Except for the carbon dioxide in the natural gas, no other waste gas or slag is emitted.
In short, no matter from the technical conditions or the production conditions, sintered corundum can replace any molten corundum.
